IETF BCP 47

IETF BCP 47 is used to specify languages and their regional variants. These codes help in identifying the language and its specific dialect or regional usage.

The tag system is extensible to region, dialect, and private designations. It references ISO 639, ISO 3166 and ISO 15924.

The first part consists of a two-letter lowercase ISO 639 language code.

The second part, if present, is a two-letter uppercase ISO 3166 country code that specifies the region.

Examples:

  • en-US: English as used in the United States
  • en-GB: English as used in Great Britain
  • fr-FR: French as used in France
  • fr-CA: French as used in Canada
